A closed-door pharmacy tech, also known as a closed-door pharmacy technician, works in a pharmacy that does not serve walk-in customers or patients directly. Instead, they primarily provide pharmacy services to specific settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, mail-order pharmacies, or specialty pharmacies. A closed-door pharmacy technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient distribution of medications in healthcare settings that do not have a retail or public-facing component. Work as part of a pharmacy team, supporting pharmacists in dispensing medications, managing inventory, and maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Medication Dispensing:
    • Accurately prepare and dispense medications based on prescription orders, ensuring proper dosage, labeling, and packaging.
    • Verify medication orders for accuracy and completeness.
  • Medication Inventory Management:
    • Monitor medication stock levels and assist in maintaining appropriate inventory.
    • Perform routine inventory checks and reorder supplies as needed.
  • Pharmacy Record Keeping:
    • Maintain patient records and prescription files in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
    • Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information.
  • Quality Control:
    • Perform quality assurance checks to ensure the accuracy and safety of dispensed medications.
    • Report any discrepancies or errors to the pharmacist.
  • Pharmacy Compliance:
    • Adhere to all federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations and guidelines.
    • Assist in the documentation and reporting of controlled substance transactions.
